MikisTheodorakis, overleden op zijn 96e, beleefde een eeuw Griekse geschiedenis aan den lijve. Als verzetsman tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd hij door de bezetter gearresteerd; in de burgeroorlog van 1946 tot 1949 werd hij naar een heropvoedingskamp gestuurd en gefolterd, wat hem levenslange gezondheidsproblemen
